Zearalenone is an oestrogenic
mycotoxin produced by a number of species of fusarium. Zearalenone
readily colonise cereals such as barley, wheat, rice and maize
during cool and wet growing seasons.
Due to its ability to ability to survive processing, zearalenone
has also been found in breakfast cereals, breads and animal
feed products.
Zearalenone acts by mimicking the effect of the female hormone
oestrogen, causing adverse effects on the mammalian reproductive
system resulting in infertility.
